Social Studies

Social Studies is an opportunity for students to learn about the world around them and to seek answers to the question: “How did this come to be this way?”

In Elementary School, Social Studies focuses on the theme of community. Each grade’s studies are focused on a central question relating to the idea of community ranging from “How do I meet my basic needs?” to “How does the land affect people and how do people affect the land?” to “What is culture?”.

Through hands-on activities, role-playing, discussions, and creative projects, students learn to ask deep questions about their world, question their assumptions, make observations, and consider alternate perspectives. Social and emotional education is woven throughout the Social Studies units so that as students learn about their world they also learn how to engage in it. Students discover not only how the world has been and how it currently is, but also the role they have in shaping how it will be.
